Watches & Jewellery April 2014

On April 25th 2014, a press conference was held in Shenzhen to review the consumption data of the Chinese jewellery market in 2013. The data showed that sales volume of all gold, silver and jewellery products was 295.9 Billion RMB a growth of 25.8% compared to 2012. The figures include jade sales of 20 Billion RMB, diamond sales of 30 Billion RMB and pearl sales of 70 Billion RMB. Gold, silver and jewellery sales were over 12 Billion RMB online.

China International Gold, Jewellery & Gem Fair

Held on February 26th, the 12th China International Gold, Jewellery & Gem Fair was held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. It is the largest international jewellery event in southern China and one of the indicators of the Chinese jewellery industry.

More than 350 exhibitors from Belgium, Finland, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United States and other international nations together with those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan were in attendance.

Around the brands

Cartier

In March this year Cartier closed its only store in Fuzhou, in the Grand Ocean Mall, the empty space will be taken by Gucci and Burberry in the future. Currently the brand has 4 stores in Fujian province and all of them are in Xiamen.

Tiffany

On April 16th Tiffany opened its second store in Chengdu, covering 140 sqm in the newly opened Chengdu IFS.

Chopard

According to Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the Co-President of Chopard, ‘Globally, the Haute Joallerie business accounted for approximately 20% of all of our jewellery sales, but was only 5% in China. This is very interesting, China is a new market for us but it is steadily growing year by year. Everything has just started here. Only a few clients have ordered Haute Joallerie from us but even so, this year we already have had two Chinese guests visit our factory. We will also encourage our Chinese team to invite and bring more VIP guests to Europe. We are really looking forward to the Haute Joallerie market in China.’

Piaget

In the end of February 2014, Piaget opened a brand new flagship store in Chengdu IFS that is claimed to be the largest Piaget store in China.

Mikimoto

After opening its first store in Beijing in the Shin Kong Plaza in 2007, Mikimoto celebrated its second boutique store opening in the city in Oriental Plaza on 15th April.

Panerai

In March 2014, Panerai opened the 10th Panerai exclusive Chinese store in the Chengdu IFS.

Glashütte Original

‘Chinese female watch consumer spending power is growing’ according to Yann Gamard, the Global President of Glashütte Original. ‘Currently female watch sales account for 15% of our total sales, but with the launch of several new female watches, I think within a year this proportion will rise to 30%- 35%. We are optimistic about the Chinese market and plan to open 15 to 20 additional stores in the future (currently we
have 30 stores in China), but it is will be long process.’
